On May 18th, 2016, the Vermont State Police, Orleans County Sheriff's, Newport Fire & Rescue, Newport City Police, and other area agencies participated an event planned by North Country Union High School students. It was a simulation of a fatal DUI crash that highlighted the dangers of not only drinking and driving, but the lack of seat belt use. The students design and present this mock crash annually, with the hope that it will positively impact the behavior of fellow students year-round, but especially during prom season and end-of-the-school-year activities. Sadly, just a week and a half after this presentation, 4 NCUHS alumni were involved in a DUI crash. Speed and alcohol were to blame. None wore seatbelts. 2 died.
